Job Description

The College Diabetes Network has been growing steadily and seeks to broaden its impact by making its support networks (physical and digital) and resources accessible to more young adults with diabetes. We require a mission-driven and process-minded leader to join the team as Director of Operations. 

Reporting to the CEO, the successful candidate will be an integral member of the organization's leadership team, working in close partnership with the CEO, VP of Mission, and Director of Development. The ideal candidate will embrace our mission-driven and team-based culture. They will represent our culture internally and externally and commit to our authentic, collaborative, bold, and people-centered values. 

As part of a small dynamic team, they will see their impact firsthand and play a critical role in the organization’s functioning and success. Prior experience in nonprofit, small business, or a startup environment where they are accustomed to rolling up their sleeves, solving problems, or doing whatever it takes to get the job done is required. 

Core Responsibilities: 

  • Develop policies and procedures for finance, banking, financial controls, and reporting.

  • Design KPIs, facilitate regular department budget-to-actual and forecasting reviews, and lead the annual budget development. Oversee the annual audit.

  • Lead HR, payroll processing, and “People Operations”; instill a human capital development and “coaching” culture within the organization; review and upgrade human resources functions, including training, development, compensation and benefits, employee relations, performance evaluation, and recruiting.

  • Work closely with the Data Insights and Reporting Manager to optimize knowledge management and IT systems.

  • Ensure all legal and compliance needs are met, reported, and proactively facilitated.

  • Manage and oversee all outsourced vendor relationships/services, including accounting, technology support, legal, compliance, and human resources/payroll

  • Develop continuous improvement strategies, manage cross-functional projects, and implement new processes and approaches to support the transparent facilitation of information and data across the organization.

  • Provide a strong day-to-day leadership presence for all staff, bridge in-person and remote operations, and support an open-door policy among all staff.

  • Work with the CEO to provide timely reporting to the Board of Directors and manage all operational logistics for Board and committee meetings.

  • Work in partnership with the CEO and the leadership team to create the strategic five-year plan

  • Create a warm, engaging, mission-driven, and collaborative day-to-day work experience for all staff members and volunteers and cultivate the organization’s values throughout its work.



Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in finance or operations for a services business with a deep appreciation for client service  

  • A track record of cross-functional collaboration, working with department heads to facilitate information sharing and balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget

  • Experience at a small company or division, where they grew an organization, optimizing, and developing scalable systems to support knowledge management and accountability 

  • Experience with CRMs (preference for Salesforce) and working with a database administrator to improve systems to meet team needs

  • A team builder (in person and with remote teams) who can connect with staff individually and in groups, developing a performance culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals. 

  • Proven track record of exceeding goals and evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment

  • Ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into the organizational plan

  • Undergraduate degree required; MBA, MPA, or similar advanced degree highly desired

Experience as a hands-on manager or supervisor is required. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are required. A consensus-driven management style best describes CDN’s culture.

The organization is prepared to offer an attractive compensation package, including a competitive base salary commensurate with experience and health, 401(k), and vacation benefits. This is a fully remote position, with some travel required for periodic in-person team retreats.
