ABOUT US

Sorted is a refreshingly agile and data-driven software company, powering dynamic checkouts, carrier management, delivery tracking and automating returns management around the world. Through partnerships with some of the biggest global carriers and customer-obsessed retailers, Sorted transforms every delivery journey into a 5* customer experience.

Trusted by leading global retailers – such as ASOS, Asda and Lush – Sorted’s delivery experience platform fixes poor delivery choice, broken customer promises and disjointed post-purchase communication to increase customer happiness, drive loyalty and support retail growth.

With software now live in 17 countries, Sorted is recognised as one of fastest growing companies in Europe as named by the FT and one of the UK’s most successful digital businesses by Tech Nation’s Future Fifty, Europe’s leading late-stage growth programme.

We have ambitious plans but a brilliant team of over 100 talented people (and growing) we are confident we’ll achieve these.

Our values guide our decisions, the way we work, our culture and the people we ask to join the team. We work hard, have fun and support each other. We’re not afraid to make mistakes (we’d never learn if we didn’t) and we’re always looking to challenge ourselves. Our style is collaboration based on honesty, transparency and purpose.

And this year we’re proud to have been recognised as one of the top ten most innovative retail technologies in the UK in the BusinessCloud’s RetailTech 50 for 2022! No one likes a show off, but we can’t not shout about this. We’re working hard to make Sorted great; we know the roller coaster will continue, but with great people we think it is an exciting time here at Sorted.

If you’re inspired by what we’re doing, are up for a challenge and share our vision, we’d love to hear from you.

Requirements

ABOUT THE ROLE

With big plans for 2022, we’re on the hunt for a Director of Engineering to deliver a state-of-the-art cloud-native solutions for our latest version of the Sorted product offering. Reporting into the CTO, you will partner with the product line delivery managers and product owners to ensure that there is a well-formed backlog of work for the team, and in conjunction with the architecture team ensure that consistent engineering practices are adopted across all product line development, creating team alignment whilst giving your team the necessary autonomy for them to execute rapidly.

The day-to-day stuff:

No two days are ever the same at Sorted so what you’ll be up to will vary. The pace we move at also means priorities will change and you’ll need to be comfortable with this (we’ll support you!). But these are the things that will be core to your role and will keep you busy.

As a member of a mission-critical team, you will support the team’s career development, helping propel the team forward, and facilitate a safe environment for discussions around project progress, retrospectives, and process improvements.

The key focus areas are:

  • Setting the base line of “good” for your team and support their development through regular coaching, mentoring sessions and providing continuous feedback, addressing performance gaps as necessary
  • You will build a high performant team, setting the recruitment standard, and work with product line teams to embed the engineers, making them productive quickly.
  • You will work with other engineering managers to establish and advocate best quality engineering practices across the organization
  • In conjunction with other stakeholders, establish best operational practices and ensure they are embedded within product line deliverables
  • In conjunction with key stakeholders, establish consistent and appropriate tooling in support of monitoring, logging, alerting, and CI/CD pipelines

ABOUT YOU:

You should apply if:

  • You are a strong verbal and nonverbal communicator able to explain complex technical concepts and share your knowledge with diverse audiences.
  • You are well versed in requirements-gathering and managing stakeholders expectations
  • You should be experienced in keeping the team focused on the most important activities against a complex backdrop of priorities
  • You can balance several, often conflicting, constraints and make rapid decisions on the way forward.
  • You anticipate future technical needs for the product lines, ensuring that the teams are well placed to realize them and well versed in building roadmaps and can develop the long-term team vision, partnering with relevant stakeholders across the business.
  • You can then be accountable for driving project execution.
  • You have a curiosity about how cloud systems work and have hands on experience having worked with AWS
  • You understand what operational excellence for a SaaS product looks like and you can influence all product line stakeholders to achieve it.

And it would be super great if:

  • You know what it’s like to work in a scale up company and love the vibe (and sometimes chaos!)
