Chief Operating Officer

Move For Hunger
USA Only

Move for Hunger is a national non-profit organization that mobilizes transportation resources to reduce hunger and food waste.

We were founded in 2009 and have partnered with over 1,100 moving companies across the nation to encourage their customers to donate their food when they move. We have seen rapid expansion over the past few years within the relocation and multifamily apartment industries - with over 600,000 apartment units working with us.

In addition to rescuing food during move out, Move for Hunger also organizes thousands of food drives, fundraisers, and corporate employee engagement events. We’ve recently expanded our reach to farmers, distributors, CPG and logistics companies in an effort to recover fresh food.

Since its founding, Our team of 20+ has delivered more than 27 million pounds of food to those in need - enough to provide more than 22 million meals.

About The Role

As Chief Operating Officer, you will be a foundational member of the Move for Hunger Leadership team. You will be accountable for scaling the overall business operations as well as strategy and leadership of our Development, Multifamily, Marketing, and Transportation & Logistics teams - made up of 24 employees working both remotely and in a New Jersey office.

You may be asking yourself - what do those teams do? We’d love to share!

Our Development team is responsible for raising revenue through corporate partnerships, special events, employee engagement/giving strategies, cause marketing campaigns, individual donors, and foundation grants. They also manage the majority of our strategic partnerships.

Our Multifamily team is responsible for recruiting and onboarding multifamily apartment communities and engaging them to successfully implement our food collection programs.

Our Transportation & Logistics team is responsible for recruitment, management, and recognition of our moving and transportation network as well as organizing the logistics of food pickups/deliveries to food banks across the nation. They also oversee our food drives.

Our Marketing team is responsible for managing our email marketing automations, website, social media, press, and collateral related to the Move For Hunger brand. Much of their work supports the larger team to drive new donors, events, partners, members, and overall engagement.

We have a physical office and warehouse where we store & distribute food collection bags, food drive, event materials, and other program collateral for our network of partners.

This role will report directly to the Executive Director.

Move For Hunger is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to building a company that celebrates and embraces diversity and inclusion. We do not discriminate on the basis of ancestry; age; appearance; color; gender identity and/or expression; genetics; family or parental status; marital, civil union, or domestic partnership status; mental, physical, or sensory disability; national, social or ethnic origin; past or present military service; sexual orientation; socioeconomic status; race; religion or belief.

Requirements

We’d love to hear from you if:
  • You have been there, done that: You have 8+ years of experience managing a team larger than 5, ideally with experience managing managers. You are a proven leader and respected manager, who holds their team accountable while creating a motivating, inclusive, and collaborative environment.
  • You are a high-achieving, self-starter: You’re naturally ambitious and have a bias towards action - identifying opportunities and running with them. You don’t settle for the status quo, work well with ambiguity, and can run a project from start to finish with little supervision. There is no such thing as an idea too big. You’re motivated not only to meet but exceed your goals and to grow Move For Hunger’s impact.
  • You can simplify the complex: You can take a really complicated problem, project, or task and easily break it down into tangible and easy to understand elements.
  • You are cool under pressure: Leading a team, working at a non-profit, and having a high-exposure role can feel like a lot of pressure. You will be most successful in this role if you don’t sweat the small stuff, or the big stuff - especially when it counts.
  • You are flexible: You’re comfortable with a number of evolving priorities, thrive in ambiguity, and are open to new ideas when opportunities present themselves.
  • You are data-informed: You are extremely curious and can both ask and answer thoughtful questions using strong analytical skills.
  • You are solutions oriented: You use all the tools at your disposal to develop creative solutions and better processes - all while being scrappy (we are both a startup and a non-profit after all).
  • You are empathetic & trustworthy: Team members feel comfortable discussing sensitive matters with you and know they can count on you to support them.
  • You are a multitasking pro: You know how to prioritize and can switch gears seamlessly without getting your feathers ruffled (or ruffling anyone else’s).
